What kind of Pipe does CCS use and why is that important?
One of the most important factors involved in designing an efficient irrigation system that will provide you with worry free operation is what you don’t see. Underground an irrigation system is comprised of a network of hundreds of feet of main and lateral pipe lines that deliver water from your home to the sprinkler heads throughout your yard. There is friction loss, or loss of water pressure in all pipe. A key factor to an efficient irrigation system is to minimize that loss by using pipe that carries the least friction loss. Poly pipe, a type of soft pipe that is used by some contractors because it is easier and cheaper to install, carries a high friction loss. If less than desirable pipe is installed, water pressure can drop significantly at the sprinkler heads. To compensate for this loss a greater number of sprinkler heads or irrigation zones may be installed to adequately cover the property. The greater the number of heads or zones, the more components to service for years to come. Please check with your bidders and inquire about what type of main and lateral pipe they propose to use for your new irrigation system. CCS installs only high quality 1” SDR PVC 21 class 200 hard pipe. To make it simple, it is the same type of hard PVC pipe that is in your home’s plumbing system. The class 200 means that it can withstand 200 pounds per square inch of water pressure! Most importantly it provides very little friction loss, allowing us to maximize your available water pressure and minimize the number of system components.

Yes! …No more worrying about how much or how frequently to water. CCS will install a Digital Hunter Irrigation controller equipped with a battery back up, incase of power failure. Your controller will be programmed to automatically deliver 1” of precipitation per week; the amount recommended for our region to keep your lawn green and thriving. Your new system will also come equipped with a rain sensor. What is a rain sensor? It is a device that will detect precipitation. When 1/8th of an inch of precipitation or more is detected just prior to our during a scheduled run cycle, the rain sensor communicates with your irrigation controller and tells the system that it is not necessary to water and to skip that irrigation run cycle. The system will resume automatically on the next scheduled run cycle after the sensor has dried sufficiently.
Once CCS has installed your new automatic irrigation system with rain senor and battery back up, you can enjoy your lawn and landscape with no more worries about when to water, how much to water, if you have watered too much or too little.
Best of all… you wont have to do a thing.
The Irrigation tie-in and backflow prevention
In order to get water to your irrigation system an irrigation tie-in has to take place. To do this we will need to tie into your homes water supply (usually located in the basement) and bring your water to the outside of the home. All inside plumbing for this will be done in copper pipe and will extend to the outside of your home in copper where we will then install a backflow prevention device. All irrigation systems are required by local code to be equipped with an approved backflow prevention device. This assembly provides a mechanical barrier between your irrigation system and your home drinking water thereby protecting your family and your neighbors from contaminants such as weed killers and or fertilizers that with out this device could back up into into your home drinking water or the public water supply. If you have an existing system and do not have a backflow device; for your safety have one installed today. After exiting the backflow device the copper line will extend down under ground where it will' then transition to the 1" pvc pipe lines that will carry water to your irrigation system.
Once you have made the smart choice to install a Chesapeake Choice Services sprinkler system we will get straight to work scheduling your installation.
Step one is that Chesapeake Choice Services will file a request with Miss Utility to have your properties public utilities located and marked. Utility clearance generally takes approximately 48-72 business hours to obtain.
Next we will coordinate the plumbing tie-in with our backflow certified plumbing contractor and confirm this appointment with you, for this portion of the work we will need access inside to the water room, you should expect your water supply to be shut off for approximately 2 hours for the tie-in to be completed.
Once we have been cleared by the utility locators to begin work we will reserve our first available installation date for you. The average size system takes 2-4 days to complete, it is not necessary for you to be present for the installation, but we will need access inside your garage to install and wire the irrigation control unit; many homeowners leave garage access for us and go on with their regular daily routines.
Chesapeake Choice Services employs an installation technique which uses a specialized machine to pull the PVC pipe underground through a very narrow slit in the soil; not an open trencher which can leave large disturbances throughout the property. This process allows for the least amount of disturbance to your landscape.
After installation your landscape is carefully checked and tamped as needed and over-seeded where necessary.
Once the new system is fully installed we will walk you through your new sprinkler system and demonstrate its use making sure we have answered any questions you may have had. We are not done until you are 100% satisfied!
What to expect during your installation.
