One of the most important factors involved in designing an efficient irrigation system that will provide you with worry free operation is what you don’t see. Underground an irrigation system is comprised of a network of main and lateral pipe lines that deliver water from your home water supply to the sprinkler heads throughout your yard. Most irrigation systems operate on 12 GPM water pressure to elevate sprinkler heads in a given zone.
As the water travels from your home through the pipe to the sprinkler heads something happens called hydrostatic friction loss, or loss of water pressure. Certain types of pipe minimize this pressure loss while others do not.
Ployethylene pipe, a type of soft pipe that is used by some contractors because it is easier and cheaper to install carries a high pressure loss rating. With this type of pipe, by the time the water reaches the sprinkler heads the water pressure has dropped considerably. Under these lower pressure conditions the installer must now compensate by installing more heads and more irrigation zones because the low pressure will not allow the heads to function at full capacity. You might wonder why more heads or zones matters to you? Well the more zones you have, the more valves and components there are to service for entire the life of the system.
Chesapeake Choice Services is dedicated to installing efficient sprinkler systems and keeps water pressure loss to a minimum by installing 1" ( or larger) SDR PVC 21 class 200 hard pipe mainlines to carry the water to the sprinkler heads, this is the same type of hard PVC pipe that is in your home’s interior plumbing system. The class 200 means that it can withstand 200 pounds per square inch of water pressure! Most importantly it provides the lest possible friction loss of all available pipe, allowing us to maximize your available water pressure and provide you with the most eco-friedly system possible.
